DIY Recipes Perfect for Hot Summer Days!

School’s out! Now what?

If you have young children in your house for the summer wanting to have some fun- rain or shine- we have fun and easy DIY recipes perfect for the whole family!

Essential oils can help enhance moods and stimulate the senses, making them an ideal choice to add to activities. The pleasant scents can also help to enhance creativity and imagination while drawing, as well as provide a way for kids to explore unique aromas during playtime.

Some kid-safe essential oils for children include:

  • Tea Tree
  • Chamomile
  • Lavender
  • Cedarwood

Instructions:

  1. Coat the inside of each deodorant container with petroleum jelly (especially towards the bottom).
  2. Pour the cold water into the disposable cup, then add the food coloring along with your desired essential oils.
  3. Scoop out ½ cup of plaster of Paris and add it to the cold water solution created.
  4. Do not touch it with your bare hands until the mixture hardens. Stir with a plastic fork until the mixture is well combined and the color is properly mixed in.
  5. Pour the chalk mixture into the deodorant container and let it sit at room temperature for at least 4 hours. After the chalk has hardened, gently compress the container sides to loosen them. Hold the twist dial inside the container with your fingers, using the grooves for grip. Apply steady pressure when twisting, without risking the middle piece breaking. Once initially loosened, the chalk should twist up and down smoothly as usual. Twist to use and enjoy! Note: Be sure you are in a well-ventilated area while doing this project (ex. outdoors).

Is it too rainy outside for sidewalk chalk? Try this recipe instead for DIY bath paints:

Fill a couple of small cups with a bit of the castile soap, then add a few drops of food coloring to avoid staining the bathtub. Add a few drops of essential oil to each cup. Mix well before starting to paint, and enjoy!
