If you’re diving into the world of essential oils, and you’re feeling in over your head, perhaps hydrosols are a better place to start. Even experienced aroma-enthusiasts can enjoy the simplicity of hydrosols.
Hydrosols are a ready-to-use product, no dilution necessary! They have a water-like consistency and are commonly used in spray bottles. Make no mistake - they are not watered down, just water-like. They are clean and fresh and will not leave an oily residue behind.
Also known as floral water, aromatic water, hydrolats and hydroflorates, hydrosols are the by-product of the essential oils distillation process. When essential oils are extracted from the plant materials, “leftover” water from the steaming process is created. Once thought of as waste, hydrosols contain all the therapeutic properties of essential oils, just at a lower concentration. Essential oils can become too strong and overly potent without proper dilution, but hydrosols are safe and ready to use. They can be sprayed into the air, applied directly to the skin, and used in the home.
Just like essential oils, each hydrosol comes with its own therapeutic benefits and suggested uses. There are so many ways to use hydrosols that we couldn’t possibly list them all! In general, the most common uses include:
- hair/face/body mist
- room/linen spray
- bath enhancement
- wound care (for cuts and scrapes, burns, rashes, fungal infections, etc)
- disinfectant/surface cleaner in the home
- in place of water for homemade beauty product recipes
- insect repellent
- hot or cold compress (for headaches, muscle pain, cramps, etc)
- as a natural perfume
- can also be used in place of water to dilute essential oils
Even more exciting, hydrosols can be mixed together to create synergistic hydro blends! Stay connected with us to learn more about our new line of hydro blends that will be released in the coming weeks.
